Philips Avent Baby Monitor Review

This is a review of the Philips Avent DECT Baby Monitor.  This Philips baby monitor has made our list of the top best baby monitors. The abbreviation, “DECT,” is not a term that is specific to the Philips name.  “DECT” is an abbreviation for “digital enhanced cordless telecommunications.”  The term “enhanced” was originally “European” because, yes, you guessed it, it was first utilized in Europe and then later “genericized.”  Said simply, DECT just means technology used for voice data applications-cell phones, wireless modems, etc.  The Philips name is probably one of the most recognized names in technology, and their reputation remains very good despite all of the hundreds of companies out there competing for their own share of the markets.

The Pros

Using our research (we call it “immersion” research, meaning we immerse ourselves in a vast array of existing research and customer reviews), we identified the following positives to the Philips Avent DECT Baby Monitor.

  1. “Clean Look/Simple Controls”-The Philips Avent DECT Baby Monitor offers the same clean look and simple controls that is so common in all of their products. Philips is a great product for anyone seeking simplicity of use and, for lack of a better term, “logical” look and feel.
  2. Sound Quality-The Philips Avent DECT Baby Monitor advertises the quality of the sound, and our research confirms that. Basically, you hear what you need to hear (your little baby) and don’t hear what you don’t want to hear.
  3. Room Temperature Gauge-Our research has proven out that, despite this sounding like a simple thing, every baby monitor that doesn’t have gets gigged for its exclusion of this feature.
  4. Wall Mounting Capability-To reiterate something about our research, we are trying to provide you with our professional services to help you make an educated decision on your selection of the best baby monitor for you. Sometimes we need to get really technical, but many times we like to draw your attention to some to the simpler features that you’ll be sorry for overlooking.  This is the case here.  The ability to mount the monitor sounds really simple, but it’s always mentioned in the feedback from the buyers who bought a product that didn’t have it.  The Philips Avent DECT Baby Monitor has a wall mounting feature.
  5. Pre-recoded Lullabies-See above.   The Philips Avent DECT Baby Monitor has the pre-recoded lullabies at your disposal.

The Cons

Scouring the reviews and testing the product we at www.todaysmonitors.com have come up with some downsides to the Philips Avent DECT Baby Monitor, here is our “Cons” list.

  1. Interference-The Philips AventDECT Baby Monitor has interference issues. Some reviews described the reception “woeful.”  Our professional judgment and knowledge base tells us that interference is just going to be an issue-period; it’s not just this make and model.
  2. Night Vision-One customer calls the night vision “bafflingly dim.” What a wonderful adjective to use! The Philips Avent DECT Baby Monitor received several reviews identifying the night vision feature as a weakness.
  3. Setup Instructions-More than a few times in our reviews did we hear users telling us that the instructions were vague and not intuitive.
  4. Help/Support Line-When our research told us that number 3 above was an issue, the hope, then, was that the customer service/help line was going to be helpful and well-prepared to assist you when there was an issue with your Philips Avent DECT Baby Monitor. Unfortunately, we ran across several reviews where the customer couldn’t even GET TO a person to help them.  First, when you call, you get an advertisement, then you get prompted for city and state, then, unfortunately, somewhere in the process you will most likely get a message saying, “I’m sorry, that was not recognized.”  Let’s keep one thing in mind, though.  Whether we like it or not, this is just the way things are nowadays, and the way help lines operate.  That’s why we often praise the companies in our reviews that actually have a help line with a person on the other line.  See our review on “Infant Optics” for an example of exemplary service.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some of the more common FAQs on the Philips Avent DECT Baby Monitor.

Q: I’m seeing lines and stripes on my screen?  What Can I do?

A:  One of the more common fixes to this is to increase your brightness on your screen.  The other problems might be that you have not removed the protective “foil like” coating on the video display.

Q: Why do the non-rechargeable batteries of the baby unit run low so quickly?

A: The Philips Avent DECT Baby Monitor comes with a lot of features, and use of those features sucks a lot of power out of the battery.  When the video display is on, when you play lullabies, when the night light is on-all of these uses deplete battery power.  Bottom line, use the household power supply whenever possible, and keep the battery use only for lack of household plugs.

Q: What should I do when the parent unit is displaying a red screen?

A: Check to make sure that the baby unit of your Philips Avent DECT Baby Monitor is switched on and the green LED light is lit.  Or, you may have lost your connection-try reconnecting.

Q: Why doesn’t the baby monitor range average the specified range mentioned in the manual?

A: The specified range is only valid given an outdoor, totally open air scenario.  Walls, wall coverings, ceilings, appliances all reduce the range of the baby monitor.

Final Verdict

We give the Philips Avent DECT Baby Monitor a thumbs up.  A final note on Philips.  Like most everyone else now, I have a TV that is flat-screened and weighs very little.  Many houses have upgraded, but some folks have retained that old TV that is about 3 feet thick and weighs about 100 pounds.  Take a look at the make of it-I bet there’s a very high percentage of those “oldies but goodies” that are made by Philips.  It’s a great name in technology.  That counts for something!
